Why does Sri Lanka's economy reach a point of crisis?


The main reason for this crisis is the lack of forex reserves. The island nation Sri Lanka is majorly dependent on the import left with only $2 Billion in forex reserves. Because of a lack of money, they are not even able to import essential commodities. 


The covid-19 pandemic stops the tourism industry which leads to an almost 10% depletion in the total GDP Value. According to the Sri Lankan export data, the tourism industry which give almost $7.8 Billion in 2019 left with only $2.8 Billion in 2021. 


Additionally, because of the ban on chemical fertilizer the agriculture sector, tea cultivation, and its export is stopped completely and this affects the economy the most. 


How does the Russian-Ukrainian War affect the economic situation of Sri Lanka? 


Around 35% of tourist in Sri Lanka comes from Russia & Ukraine and the war affect the tourism department of Sri Lanka. Also, Sri Lanka exports its Tea to Russia & Ukraine the most in return they buy more of its wheat & sunflower oil from them which leads to the high shortage of wheat and oil in Sri Lanka so we can say that the Russian-Ukrainian war is the 2nd reason of Sri Lankan economic crisis.
